The Star Lake legislation also provides lake and/or river associations with general eligibility requirements and procedures for applying for Star Lake or Star River status. To attain a Star Lake or Star River designation, a lake or river association must, at a minimum:
- develop a lake or river management according to specified guidelines
- maintain a membership or participation of at leat 50 percent of private shoreland owners
- participate in a water quality monitoring program meeting Minnesota Pollution Control Agency standards
- meet at least annually to review the management plan and to monitor progress
The Star Lake Board will review applications. Lake and/or river associations that have attained the Star designation are eligible to apply for special project grants that will be disbursed through a competitive process.
